More than an H1N1 test

A broader, clinically useful answer.

Our Swine Flu Panel covers Influenza A, Influenza B, H1N1, H3N2 and RSV.

These infections can look very similar, yet each may require different treatment, monitoring or supportive care. As a medically led laboratory, we believe testing should provide the most clinically useful answer—not simply the narrowest test.

UNDERSTANDING INFLUENZA

When it looks like a cold, it may still be influenza.

H1N1, H3N2, Influenza B, RSV and other respiratory viruses often present with overlapping symptoms. While many infections remain mild, some can progress to pneumonia, respiratory distress or complications in high-risk patients.

The clinical value of testing is not simply confirming “flu”—it is identifying which respiratory virus is causing the illness, early enough to guide the next clinical decision.

Illustration of a person experiencing cough, fever and headache

Typical symptoms

Sudden fever or feeling feverish

Chills

Cough

Sore throat

Runny or blocked nose

Headache

Muscle and body aches

Marked fatigue or weakness

Reduced appetite

Vomiting or diarrhoea, especially in children

Important: Influenza can occur without fever. Symptoms alone cannot confirm the virus or reliably distinguish H1N1, H3N2 and Influenza B.
PATTERN, NOT DIAGNOSIS

Flu or a common cold?

Onset

Cold: usually gradual
Body aches
Flu: often prominent
Cold: usually mild

Flu: can be marked
Cold: usually mild
48hours

WHY TIMING MATTERS

Early answers. Timely treatment. Better outcomes.

Influenza antivirals work best when started as early as possible, ideally within about 48 hours of symptom onset. But 48 hours is not an absolute cutoff: people with severe or progressive illness, hospitalisation or high-risk conditions may still benefit when treatment starts later.

WHEN TO CONSIDER RT-PCR

Testing may be useful when…

Symptoms are moderate, severe or worsening

The patient is pregnant, very young, older or immunocompromised

There is asthma, diabetes, heart, lung, kidney or liver disease

Pneumonia or lower-respiratory disease is suspected

Identifying the virus may change clinical management

A doctor recommends RT-PCR or an outbreak needs confirmation

DO NOT SIMPLY BOOK A TEST

Seek urgent medical care

If any warning signs are present, urgent assessment matters more than arranging an outpatient test.

Illustration of a patient receiving urgent medical assessment with family support

Breathlessness or difficulty breathing

Chest pain

Bluish lips, face or nails

Confusion, fainting or altered consciousness

Severe lethargy, dehydration or marked weakness

Coughing blood

Poor feeding in a young child

Symptoms that improve and then become significantly worse

Worsening of an important underlying condition

MEET THE VIRUSES

Similar symptoms. Different clinical context.

Respiratory syndromes overlap too much for reliable symptom-only identification.

01Influenza A+

A major cause of seasonal flu. H1N1 and H3N2 are Influenza A subtypes.

02H1N1 (Swine flu)+

Symptoms alone cannot reliably separate it from H3N2; subtype identification adds precision.

03H3N2+

Another seasonal Influenza A subtype that can cause substantial illness.

04Influenza B+

Clinically indistinguishable from Influenza A and should not be assumed mild.

05Influenza C+

Usually milder, but can cause lower-respiratory illness.

06RSV A/B+

Important in infants, older adults and vulnerable people.

07Human metapneumovirus A/B+

Can resemble RSV, with cough, wheeze or pneumonia.

08Rhinovirus+

A frequent cause of colds and an important asthma trigger.

09Adenovirus+

May cause respiratory, eye or gastrointestinal symptoms.

10Enterovirus+

EV-D68 can cause severe wheeze; new weakness needs urgent assessment.

11Human bocavirus+

Mostly associated with respiratory illness in young children.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Clear answers, before you call.

Which flu and respiratory virus panels does Dr Bhasin's Lab offer?+

Dr Bhasin's Lab offers two flu and respiratory virus panels. The Swine Flu Panel tests for Influenza A, Influenza B, H1N1 influenza (commonly called swine flu), H3N2 and RSV. The Comprehensive Flu Panel tests for H1N1, H3N2, hMPV A & B, Bocavirus, Enterovirus, Rhinovirus, Adenovirus and Influenza A, B & C. Both panels use RT-PCR on a combined nose and throat swab. Walk-in sample collection is available 24×7×365 at our Greater Kailash-I laboratory. Home collection is available across Delhi NCR up to 11 PM, subject to location and slot availability. Reports are typically available within 8–10 hours from sample collection.

Can symptoms tell H1N1 from H3N2 or Influenza B?+

No. Symptom overlap is too great for reliable bedside identification.

When is the best time to test?+

Respiratory viral load is generally highest early in illness, so early collection can improve yield.

Should I wait for the PCR report before treatment?+

Not if you are very unwell. Clinically indicated treatment should not be delayed solely for a result.

What sample is collected?+

A trained collector takes a combined nasopharyngeal and oropharyngeal swab. No fasting is required.

Does a negative panel rule out infection?+

No. It does not exclude every virus, bacterial infection or non-infectious illness.

Do I need an appointment or prescription?+

No. Walk in 24×7 at GK-I or request home collection, subject to availability.

Is swine flu testing at Dr Bhasin's Lab NABL accredited?+

Yes. Swine flu testing at Dr Bhasin's Lab is NABL accredited under ISO 15189:2022 (certificate NABLM0626DL08110, valid until 16 May 2030). Details are on our accreditation and quality page.

Is home collection extra?+

No extra home-collection charge is added to these test prices.
